| Resumo: | This chapter reviews the work of the 1984-1995 Bateson documentation project in three stages. First an introduction with an overview of the context and outcomes. Secondly a more detailed presentation of some of the Cambridge Sepik collections under three headings: masquerade, faces and face-painting, animals and birds. Finally the current on-line offer for Sepik art and culture will be reviewed, and suggestions made for future developments. The timing of the Bateson project, during the first phases of computerised cataloguing and before digital photography, left Cambridge with an awkward hybrid result. Now, more than 20 years on, is a good opportunity to review the project outcomes, show their usefulness to date, and reflect on opportunities for sharing and re-engagement. |
