| Summary: | This text reflects on the experience of an academic space hosting displaced people during a climate crisis in Porto Alegre in 2024. The arrival of hundreds of people at a shelter set up in the PUCRS sports centre highlighted existing forms of social precariousness and State neglect, particularly for the residents of Frederico Mentz Street, whose history is ironically marked by a paradox between progress and marginalization. Life in the shelter exposed dynamics of exclusion and resistance, both in terms of the institutional violence suffered by the displaced and their strategies for reinventing daily life. The academic space became a miniature city, where access to basic goods—typically denied to this population—elicited reflections on structural inequality. Literature and the arts emerged as tools for reinterpreting the experience, fostering moments of escape and humanization. |
