| Streszczenie: | Following the example of literatures of other formerly colonized countries, the emerging Brazilian literature rises from models and traditions with which it had to break up in order to achieve a certain emancipation. How do Brazilian novelists handle the matter of colonial, or post-colonial dependency in their works? What strategies do they employ to free themselves from it and achieve a (relative) autonomy? These are only some of the questions which have nourished the critical discourse formulated inside the Brazilian literary system, which we will debate in this article. Without pretending to generalize the colonial fact, or even to consider it as an essential point, or take it out of the historic context, the main idea is to have a reflection on how the quest for autonomy appears in certain landmark works in Brazilian literature and how literary critique has handled this phenomenon over the course of the 19th and 20th centuries (through romanticism and modernism). |
