| Samenvatting: | In the northem, Chilean part of Patagonia, the local, insular society is succeeding in the revitalization and contemporary reinterpretation of its architectural heritage, built traditionally out of wood. This has occurred under the impulse of architects who came in the 1980s. The process has consolidated cultural identity and reinforced awareness of this heritage. Nevertheless, the shift to a stage where the population transforms this consciousness into a development tool, committing itself, at a local level, to collective actions for heritage projects, is longer than anticipated. This is due to the weight of tradition, linked to geographical isolation and the individualism of the population. Participating in modern associations to undertake strategic actions is a major challenge for the islanders. |
