| Izvleček: | This research note traces the evolution of “Martyrs’ Day” in Egypt from its creation in 1969 by Nasser to 2019. Long neglected, this commemoration was originally designed to honor the martyrs of the army. However, it was reinvented by various revolutionary actors in 2011 to celebrate the “Martyrs of the Revolution” before being taken over by the authorities in 2013. Since then, it has been dedicated solely to the “Martyrs of Duty”, i.e. soldiers and policemen who died in the “war against terrorism” waged by the Egyptian state. The commemoration has experienced an unprecedented popularization and mediatization. |
