| Shrnutí: | Jane Addams (1860-1935) and Ellen Gates Starr (1859-1940) co-founded Hull-House in 1889, an institution located in a marginalized neighborhood in Chicago, to improve the living conditions of immigrants arriving in the United States. Residents of Hull-House organized cooperative political, cultural, and artistic practices with their neighbors, contributing to the democratic transformation. Artistic collaborations among immigrants from diverse backgrounds played a significant role, empowering women and immigrants and fostering a sense of agency and belonging. All kinds of arts were practiced under the direction of women. These practices allowed the development of what Addams called “sympathetic knowledge” - i.e., the ability to understand others, promoting cooperative relationships. Sympathetic knowledge integrates emotions with understanding, resembling the contemporary concept of empathy. However, for Addams, it has a relational and practical sense. Rather than just a personal skill, it is a co-creative practice. It enables the building of participatory relationships that democratically transform society. Addams’ proposal transcends the feminist critique of the dichotomy between a public space governed by justice and the private sphere of care governed by affections, not only turning care into a fundamental public issue but transforming relationships to empower everyone. |
