| Summary: | Throughout his long career, Habermas has critically appropriated pragmatist motifs, borrowings that are visible in different aspects of his philosophy and, in particular, in his conception of the public sphere and democracy. This intellectual debt, especially that which Habermas owes to Dewey, has, however, been little heeded in the secondary literature on the German philosopher and sociologist's thought. This article seeks to highlight the common elements that bind the two authors together, without concealing the distance that separates them. |
