| Summary: | The extreme differences in the contexts of writing (Leningrad in the 1920s) and of production of the first translations into French (Paris and Lausanne in the 1970s) and their effects on the transmission of Bakhtin’s and Voloshinov’s thought in the West remain understudied. The deficit in knowledge of the specific contexts of Bakhtin and Voloshinov not only affects the reception of these works as (problematic) examples of “Marxist” studies at the height of the Cold War but also causes specific misappropriations due to the evolution of various epistemological discourses in the West in the intervening years. These issues directly affect the translation of terms, such as slovo (word), ideologiia (ideology) and vyskazyvanie (utterance), and reveal some of the mechanisms at work in cross-linguistic and cross-cultural transfers. |
