The article attempts to provide tools for the description of a poem by major contemporary British poet J.H. Prynne, focusing on its rhythm and on its intonation. It argues that, if is taken not to make unsustainable claims, it is possible to discuss intonation-group boundary and tone choice on the basis of textual and contextual factors; in the case of “Again in the Black Cloud”, a basic prosodic shape can be determined at the level of the whole poem, over which play local patterns of intonational and rhythmic variation. These additions to critical vocabulary enrich our capacity to describe the forms of non-metrical poetry.
