Shrnutí:This paper presents the published document following it. It insists on the originality of this professional autobiography. This originality makes its value for the historians of technology and for other historians interested in studying actual practices. Describing forty years of an engineer’s activity, from the drawing board and the shop floor to the production management of the second automotive company in the thirties France, the autobiography of Ernest Mattern introduces us to the logics of an organizer’s action all the development of the automobile industry long, but not only. It displays also the relationship that an actor maintains with his/her own practice. The subjectivity of this first hand testimony is no hindrance. On the contrary, it is an help enabling us to comprehend what was a practice of technology in the first half of the 20th century consisting of, because this autobiography was written not only from the author’s memory but from archival material and for people who were direct witnesses of the described facts. This practice is tackling the relationship between the artifacts (their design, their manufacture, and the relevant management tools) and all humans involved in the process, from the entrepreneur to the workers. This text has an action on the history of technology : not because it would be another example of technology/society relationship, but because it shows us how much technology is linked with the very person having it as an object of his/her action, that is with all the persons, whatever the “categories” used to classify them, who take a share in the process. This document enables us to compare this practice with others of the same kind, as far as the sources make it possible, and to investigate other technological practices and not only technological ones.
