This volume includes ten early 2000s articles discussing the writings of Walter Pater especially paying attention to the then neglected texts on Greco-Roman mythology, on ‘Joachim du Bellay’, on the enigmatic and programmatic ‘Diaphanéitè’, or on Plato and Platonism. Marius The Epicurean and ‘The School of Giorgione’ are also discussed. All studies pay a necessary tribute to the diversity of Pater’s interests from Greco-Roman and Renaissance to Victorian art, from medieval and French literature of the 16th century to philosophy and its history, from mythology to essay. One article studies Pater’s dialogue with John Henry Newman, emphasizing the fine, thought-provoking and erudite prose-writer Pater remains. Two articles respectively explore the contemporary reception of Pater and the use of information technologies to approach a protean work that still engages with contemporary issues. Early-career and senior researchers from the United States, Britain, Germany, Japan and France testify to the importance of Pater’s oeuvre for today’s research.
