| الملخص: | While having all the staple ingredients of a children’s book (illustrations and a good deal of apparent nonsense included) George MacDonald’s best-seller At the Back of the North Wind (1871) is also a sophisticated work whose profundity has not been fully appreciated. Its intriguing subtexts in particular have been either dismissed as padding or simply ignored, even though they make up as much as about one third of the book. They are in fact as many pieces of a jigsaw puzzle the key to which is North Wind’s secret identity. The present paper lays bare that occulted identity before showing how the profound meaning and the very structure of the book are illuminated by such a discovery. |
