| Sumari: | This 65th issue of Cahiers victoriens et édouardiens is a collection of seven articles based upon papers given on the occasion of the Hardy conference which was held in Toulouse II on 31 March 2006 and was entitled ‘Thomas Hardy: Writing and Modernity’, convened by Catherine Lanone and Isabelle Gadoin-Luis. Some of them are dedicated to a specific piece of writing—A Laodicean (Peggy Blin-Cordon), The Dynasts (Laurence Estanove), On the Western Circuit (Catherine Lanone), or Desperate Remedies (Laurence Talairach-Vielmas),—while some others are more thematically-oriented, such Annie Escuret’s piece on Hardy’s paradoxical writing, between generation and entropic degradation, Isabelle Gadoin’s paper on Wessex, that strange / foreign space, Annie Ramel’s Lacanian article on Tess’s throttled voice. These essays are followed by articles gathered under the simple heading « Miscellany » : successively focusing on Wilkie Collins’s Basil, which is traced back to Abbé Prévost’s Manon Lescaux and Dumas’s La Dame aux camélias, H. G. Wells’s The Invisible Man, or Saki’s When William Came. |
