| Sumari: | As a means of understanding early pre-comic book comics cultures, this prosopographical (collective biographical) study examines a sample of adolescents who entered the Open Road for Boys magazine cartooning contests in the early 1930s. It explores questions of demographics, adult occupations, avocational interests, and potential participatory networks in order to understand more about the young people who participated in these near-monthly competitions. An outsized number of contest participants in this sample went on to professional art careers as cartoonists, commercial artists, animators, and related fields. |
