Just as a « youth culture of adolescence » was emerging, encouraged by high-school sociability, the ideal of keeping young people disciplined and under the direct orders of the Party led to a tightening of state control over young people’s behaviour and prompted surveillance of their intimate relations. Examining the varied attempts to control young people’s sexuality over these two decades, this article shows how the sexual autonomy of high-school students raised gendered fears, for which different answers were proposed. It is possible to observe the transition from a wholly repressive attitude to an educational and health-care approach, which depended increasingly on the interiorization by girls – more than by boys – of the expected social norms relating to sexual activity.
