| Περίληψη: | The article examines the dynamics of social life in Galicia in the second half of the nineteenth century with special emphasis on women’s involvement. The author explores the practices of tovarys´ke zhyttia (sociability) during that period, and analyzes how those practices both reflected the development of public space and shaped the marginalization or integration of women into public life. As national and social divisions frequently overlap, the primary focus of the article is on the latter. The research draws on ego-documents from various ethnic and social groups and is structured around four case studies: the Jewish Lilien family of bankers, the Polish Garczyński family of bank officials, the Ukrainian Olesnyts´ky family of priests, and the Bogdanowiczes, a Polish-Armenian noble family. A detailed analysis of the social practices shared by these families, as well as the roles women played within them, reveals the complex interplay between the private and the public spheres, offering insights into the nuances of gender hierarchies during this period. |
