| Περίληψη: | Magona’s use of the maternal trope projects an individual’s attempt to create a space for herself by maneuvering through two competing yet converging maternal discourses, one Western, the other African. Ultimately, her complex tactical exercise serves three important functions. On the level of discourse, it enables her to explore the differences between the experiences of and factors influencing the practices of black working-class and white middle-class mothers in apartheid South Africa between 1960 and 1980. Secondly, on the level of practice, she portrays the difficulties she experiences as a mother negotiating the two maternal discourses. Lastly, she openly explores the opposing tensions inherent in motherhood as an essential part of her self-definition or identity. |
