| Streszczenie: | In Ayi Kwei Armah’s first novel, The Beautyful Ones Are Not Yet Born, a nameless protagonist is assaulted by the extremes of Ghanaian society: wealth and poverty, action and passivity, purity and filth. Armah marks these extremes spatially in the images of land and water. This essay explores the physical and metaphorical aspects of the space between these extremes, namely the beach and the wharf. Finally the author examines how the novel’s final scene hinges on understanding the ambiguities that exist within these spaces. |
