| Sažetak: | U.R. Ananta Murthy’s novel Samskara is a dramatization of moral dilemmas concerning the body. The body in question here is an identitarian, desiring and decaying entity. The novel pushes the reader into another kind of dilemma: how should one respond to this literary body without slotting it into some narrative of universal schema succumbing to an ethnographic frame. This paper, while analyzing the moral dilemmas enacted in the novel, argues that the question of ethics is deeply connected to the thematic of the body as well as the problematic of reading. It also attempts to address these issues in the larger historical framework of Indian cultural practices, which are conventionally represented by the binary discursive frame of the epistemic and the accursed. |
