The opus Hiob oder die Vier Spiegel by the German author and poet Karl Wolfskehl (1869-1948) is based on the hybridisation of the biblical myth of Job with another Jewish myth. This paper aims to characterize the assimilation from Job with Samson to reveal Wolfskehl’s thoughts and interrogation about pain and suffering. The self‑destruction which happens at the end of the poem “Hiob Simson” shows in which way the poet questions the theodicy and reveals the tragedy Wolfskehl had to face, when he is confronted with the end of the German-Jewish symbiosis. The analysis of the hybridisation focuses on three different points: identity, poetology and polemic. |
