This article shows the extent to which the work Faust (2017) by German visual artist Anne Imhof utilizes the aesthetic as well as the socio-critical potential of performance, understood as transgression. In Imhof’s work, questions about the commercialization of art are linked to those about body identity and heteronormativity. Faust thus functions as a work that, on the one hand, problematizes contemporary concepts of gender, such as the idea of non-binarity as liberation. On the other hand, the performance questions certain simplistic definitions of a post-1945 artistic neo-avant-garde, conventionally defined as a critical-transgressive counterpart to the mainstream. Instead of perpetuating binary, both aesthetic and social juxtapositions of normativity and transgression, Imhof breaks them open from within, thereby revealing their fundamental ambivalence.
