| Streszczenie: | The oeuvre of Cuban sculptor Agustín Cárdenas (1927-2001) defies the categories and concepts that have participated in the elaboration of mid-20th century art historical narratives. This paper seeks to cast light on the artist’s five-decade career within the context of the cosmopolitan postwar Parisian art scene, where he developed a singular and prolific body of work that intersected with surrealism and abstract trends, while cultivating relationships with artists and intellectuals from the Afro-Caribbean and Latin-American diasporas, such as Wifredo Lam, Roberto Matta and Édouard Glissant, among others. By reviewing the artist’s critical reception and delving into unpublished archival sources, this examination enriches the extant scholarship and enlarges the scope of the Anglo-European-centric perspectives on Agustín Cárdenas’ artistic production that have predominated until very recently. |
