| Summary: | This issue of Cadernos de Estudos Africanos is the outcome of the internacional conference Youth and Modernity in Africa held at ISCTE, Lisbon, in October 2007. The purpose of the event was to explore and problematise the link between generation and change, witnessing the ambiguous and troubled relationship between youth and social and cultural change in contemporary Africa. The challenge the authors of this issue take up is that of assessing the role of youth in processes of social transformation, avoiding the pifaills of notions of modernity or modernization as limiting theoretical tools, but without overlooking the remarkable cultutal dynamics that characterise contemporary Africa. Articles by: Eric Gable, Cristina Udelsmann Rodrigues, Ramon Sarró, Henrik Vigh, Aghi Bahi, Elísio Macamo, Jean Bernard Ouédraogo and Lorenzo I. Bordonaro. |
