| Sammanfattning: | This article is based on the study of the archives of the Venetian Consulate in Cyprus. It focuses on presenting the Cypriot and Venetian textile productions and their use during the 18th century in Cyprus. Among the noteworthy Cypriot products of the time were printed fabrics, which had great commercial success both in Cyprus and abroad. Equally important in the 18th century were the rasetti, Cypriot silk fabrics with a special sheen and colourful decoration, usually striped. Turning its attention to fabrics imported from Venice, the article discusses typologies, woven techniques, decoration and prices, as well as the names of the traders who imported them and the fabrics’ use in local attire. The Venetian fabrics were of higher durability and resistance than other fabrics, for instance English and (especially) French. This was due to the good quality of the thread, its thickness and woven structures. That seems to be the reason why Eastern markets preferred Venetian loom products. In the East, provenance, durability and high prices determined the social value of goods. This social value in turn gave their owners distinction within a social group, at a given space and time. |
