| Sammanfattning: | This article concentrates on a forgotten place of worship located in the modern city of Larnaca. An ancient rock‑cut tomb (possibly of the 4th century B.C.) was considered as the sepulchre of saint Therapon and consequently transformed into a Christian subterranean chapel. During the Ottoman period, the place became the seat of a dervish community (tekke) but remained frequented by Christians. The buildings attached to the place were obliterated in the mid 20th century, and its imprint on the local place names now also tends to vanish. This article aims at reconstructing the long and rich past of this place of worship, which was part of a network of other comparable places in the city of Larnaca (both old Larnaca and Scala) and up to the southern shore of the Salt lake. |
