| Summary: | Abstract. Personifications of abstract ideas were often depicted in the late antique eastern Mediterranean, especially in floor mosaics. While many personifications survive in a few examples, one personification stands out as particularly popular: Ktisis (“Foundation”). She is represented in at least seventeen examples from various locations. A well-known figure is in the Bath of Eustolios at Kourion. This paper catalogues all currently known examples of this personification and sets the Kourion figure within the larger context of the personified concept, emphasizing its particular connection between patron and personification and its role as demonstration of the patron’s prestige as a founder. |
