Opis
Streszczenie:This article presents the findings of a survey of the Argentinian scientific journal ecosystem, performed in October 2021, with a focus on the social and human sciences, exploring the publishing institutions as well as indexing practices in all the existing disciplines. These mainly Spanish-language, digital, Diamond open access journals show varying degrees of editorial professionalization. Two different groups of journals are distinguished based on their commitment to meeting the global or local standards for reviewing submissions, which defines their authorship and readership. The analysis of the characteristics of the publishers, for the vast majority affiliated with public universities, gives an overview of the material conditions of scientific publishing in the country, and calls for nuancing the image of an underdeveloped artisan model conveyed by the OPERAS Report on Diamond access journals (Bosman et al. 2021). Finally, the importance of public policies supporting scientific publishing is stressed—without them, journals will be unable to meet the demands of professionalization and boost their exposure without sacrificing scientific rigour, and in doing so receive more recognition from national research evaluation systems.
