| Resumo: | In Byzantium, conceptions and practices of marriage were not fixed, and the principles of how to enter and form a union varied until the end of the ninth century. In this article, the legal framework in force at the time, which validates marital life, is briefly discussed. I show that the authors, especially of hagiographical texts, avoided referring to the way marriages were contracted, insofar as the Byzantines did not seek – as far as permitted – the blessing of the Church, considering the foundation of a new family as a matter that concerned exclusively society and the State. |
