Shrnutí:The non-interventionist policy pursued by the French Government during the Spanish Civil War (1936–1939) prohibited, but did not prevent, gun trading across the border. This paper deals with the role of the French Riviera Milieu as a key player of such transactions of contraband. It aims to explain why the support given to the anti-fascist cause by groups involved in procuring, drug trafficking, and extreme-right activities cannot be seen as a paradox, but rather as an inevitable occurrence. As the smuggling was simply a lucrative underground activity for the Milieu, their ideological motivations, and those of other intermediaries, are sometimes difficult to grasp, or even totally absent.
