It has often been treated as a rather uneventful interlude between the foundation of Dutch power in the seventeenth century, and the dramatic and well-known colonial transformations of the nineteenth, beginning with the Tondano War of 1808-1809 and the imposition of compulsory coffee cultivation in 1822. This article brings together material from existing research, both published and unpublished, and from some previously unused primary sources, to sketch a picture of the eighteenth century and the beginning of the nineteenth as a period of change and dynamism in the economic sphere. Exports (mostly of rice) and imports (of foreign prestige goods that also served as media of exchange in internal commerce) increased approximately fourfold, and in the 1770s and 1780s private commerce came to eclipse the official trade of the VOC. By the early nineteenth century, Minahasa was a prosperous region with a substantially commercialized economy. Its population was also much larger than it had been in 1700, a development that was almost certainly related to the long economic boom. The portrait of that boom given here may perhaps serve to facilitate identification and explanation of social and cultural changes which also took place during the same period, and which may up to now have been underestimated.
