| Gaia: | The aim of this contribution is to reappraise the identification, chronology, and significance of a corpus of six Buddhist and Hindu images, of stone or metal, uncovered at Kota Cina since the middle of the twentieth century. Four of them are dated between the eleventh and the late twelfth centuries CE. Five of these images show similarities in iconography and modeling with sculptures from South India, especially from the Tamil region, during the Cōḷa period. A stone image of Viṣṇu displays a peculiar modeling and an unusual representation of the lower garment, leading to suggest that this image was executed by a local sculptor with the help of drawings from South India. An in-depth study of this corpus not only provides clues for a better understanding of the connections between North Sumatra and South Asia, but also contributes to shed light on the still obscure history of Buddhism in South India at that time. |
