Samenvatting:The article describes and examines the divergences between a critical or cratophobic position (which aims to show the problematic aspects of State intervention, unequal distribution of power and social hierarchies) and a cratophilic position (which aims to show the positive aspects of government and hierarchies). Recent attempts to discredit a critical approach are rebutted in detail with regard to the use of the notion of power as well as to the inevitability of the political consequences of any analytical position. With regard to the use of the notion of power, it is argued that critical anthropology is not opposed or incompatible with semantic analyses; that the notion of power applied to cultural dynamics contains both the repressive and productive dimensions; and that the recognition of the relevance of politics in the ordinary process of socialization has opened up fruitful analytical perspectives. With regard to the researcher’s stance, it is reminded the epistemological debate that has characterized anthropology in the last four decades and the appropriateness and fruitfulness of an engaged positioning. The objective is to reduce the tone of the controversy and restore a dialogue within the calm and documented scientific arguments.
