| Sumari: | In this case of a small-scale fishmonger at the fishing harbour in San Pedro, Côte d’Ivoire, which brings together the topics of waiting and future making, I put forward two arguments. First, I show that there is agency in waiting, a key resource in a highly unpredictable environment. Second, considering the fact that the harbour was built to bring about the future in San Pedro and based on the premise that spaces are temporalised, I argue that the space in which the fishmonger waits adds a layer to her future temporal orientation, that of project time. With this new positioning between the immediate future and the remote future that relies on God’s agency, she can engage in future making. It is precisely because she is waiting at the harbour that she can consider and act upon this new temporal horizon. |
