| Shrnutí: | Drawing on semi-structured interviews with individuals living with diverse chronic conditions, this article develops a philosophical inquiry anchored in lived experience of chronic illness. It identifies “uncertain recognition” as a central yet overlooked dimension of chronic illness. Rather than reflecting denial or misunderstanding, this “uncertain recognition” appears as constitutive of the lived experience of chronic illness itself. The study links this uncertainty to the complex temporalities of chronic illness, marked not only by duration but also by discontinuity, irregularity, and non-linearity. To conceptualise this, the article introduces the notion of “chronic experience,” offering a framework that captures the interplay between shifting self-recognition and the complex temporalities of chronic illness. In doing so, it contributes to an empirically informed philosophical characterisation of chronic illness and addresses calls to bridge experiential accounts with conceptual analyses of illness, disease, and health. |
