Zusammenfassung:This article addresses the concepts of race and ethnicity based on ethnographic inquiries conducted in the Brazilian Amazon. After clarifying the lens through which both government officials and researchers have viewed “differences” on which differentiated public policies are based, it focuses on the categories employed by local populations who use “blood” to interpret their “mixture” and thus clarify their “identity.” Far from being static, this process is adaptable and can even be associated with very recent interpretations of the quest for origins. In a context where the right to benefit from preferential policies is highly competitive, some individuals claim to be willing to undergo “blood examinations” to prove without a doubt the truth of their ethno-racial identity.
