| Résumé: | This article examines how the Burakumin are still excluded in Japan by the concept of “race” and remain ascribed to an inferiorized position even though the principle of equality of all citizens is enshrined in the Japanese Constitution. After a discussion of the contribution of various Japanese publications, the article presents the results of a qualitative and quantitative study conducted among Burakumin and non-Burakumin in several Japanese cities. The article then focuses on current political movements, including the activism of the Buraku Liberation League, which aims to address the social inequalities which persist between the two groups and eliminate discriminatory behavior. |
