| Özet: | Since the 1960s, the self-determination process of the Afro-descendant raizal community from the Colombian islands of San Andres and Old Providence has primarily been examined through an instrumentalist and strategic understanding of ethnicity. As previously noted, the raizal category emerged within the Colombian constitutional framework and, more broadly, from the historical and contemporary relationship between the English-speaking Afro-descendant kriol minority and the nation-state to which it belongs. However, this article seeks to look beyond national boundaries and explore the pre-ethnic dimensions of this identity formation by investigating historical dynamics of otherness at the intersection of post-slavery Caribbean social development and emerging Latin American nationalism. |
