| Summary: | The artistic works of Zinaida Serebriakova frequently depict scenes of intimacy amongst women, laden with sensory allusions and markers of bourgeois femininity. These images foreground the female body and its capacity for feeling, offering a fleeting glimpse of a uniquely feminine sensory landscape. A woman as well as an artist, Serebriakova’s life and work illuminate how women experienced St Petersburg on a sensory level at the dawn of the twentieth century. Across three case studies, this article considers the representation of the senses in Serebriakova’s work, how this intersected with her own sensory encounters with the city, and the role sensation played in constructing feminine identity. More generally, it makes a case for greater historical attention to the reciprocal relationship between gender and the senses. |
