| Summary: | In this article, the author traces her research journey from a “horizontal” (synchronic) approach to Contrastive Discourse Analysis (CODA) toward a “vertical” (diachronic) approach by empirically uncovering, theorizing, and methodologically operationalizing the heterogeneity of discursive cultures, as well as what remains unsaid. She demonstrates that the heterogeneity of discursive cultures, far from undermining their existence, highlights their strength. These discursive cultures are both dynamic and stable, constantly evolving while still retaining (some) traces of earlier states. This not only makes a horizontal CODA fully effective – by bringing to light a network of representations with different statuses and from different periods, often in contradiction with one another – but also lends particular value to vertical CODA, which aims to trace and even date these different layers of representations. |
