Zusammenfassung:This article studies the construction and development of the star system in Hollywood from the late 1910s to the early 1930s, during the non-union period of studio history. It investigates precisely how the star system was not only an economic and financial strategy but also a tool for controlling the work and lives of Hollywood actresses and actors. From particularly union sources previously little exploited by historians who have worked on the star system, it brings to light the voices of actors and actresses who, collectively and individually, have testified to their lives, their work and their struggles in the studios’ organization of work.
