Итог:Is psychoanalysis a science, or a literary discipline? The answer to this question, whether it leans toward one option or the other, often seems self-evident, as if the question is not even worth asking. But above all, psychoanalysis is a therapeutic method. If it is only literature, it has no room in the field of care. On the other hand, if it is science, it has to prove its scientific nature instead of being dogmatically considered as such. This is precisely what G. Visentini (2024) sets out to do in Penser et écrire par cas en psychanalyse (“Thinking and Writing in Cases in Psychoanalysis”). In this book, he reconstructs, brick by brick, the epistemological foundations of the field. Through a meticulous review of Freud’s writings, the author emphasizes the scientific logic underlying psychoanalysis. He extracts all the patterns of Freud’s way of thinking (basal, medical, psychological, and psychoanalytic) and demonstrates how the latter created a new kind of scientificity with the invention of the case-demonstration. In response to the overwhelming dominance of the experimental method—implicitly upheld by neo-positivists as the only way of being scientific—Visentini’s book, which we present here, provides compelling and valuable arguments in defense of the rigor and scientific legitimacy of psychoanalysis.
