Il l’a réitéré dans un plaidoyer sur l’amnistie, en 1949, évoquant le dialogue Ménexène. Carl Schmitt Pleading for Amnesty in Platonic Terms, 1949. When Carl Schmitt was cross-examined in 1947 as a witness in the Nuremberg trial, he process the first person to draw attention to the responsibility of intellectuals who had lent ideological support to the Nazi regime. His cross-examination was published in 1972 and was translated into French in 2003. In defending himself before judge Kempner, Schmitt compared himself to Plato advising the tyrant of Sicily ! He reiterated this idea in his article in favour of amnesty in 1949, making reference to the dialogue of Menexenus. The pretentious nature of his comparisons with Plato, despite the fact that they were verbal fencing, reveal volens nolens that Schmitt was far more than a sympathiser with Hitler’s regime.
