Özet:The affinities between general nouns and two types of anaphora, resumptive anaphora and co-referential anaphora with lexical shift, are frequently emphasized in studies devoted to this category of nouns. In this paper, we study the relationship between general nouns and another type of anaphora, associative anaphora. More specifically, we study the ability of general nouns of humans like personne (‘person’), gens (‘people’) or membre (‘member’) to introduce new referents in an associative way after the mention of a collection of humans (for example, a committee, a family, a crowd). We emphasize that it is only indirectly, via indefinite NPs (e.g. certains membres ‘some members’, plusieurs personnes ‘several persons’) referring to a subset of individuals associated with a collection, that associative anaphora truly take advantage of the referential versatility of general nouns and that pronominal forms (collective ils ‘they’, tout le monde ‘everybody’) or quasi-pronominal forms (les gens ‘people’) are preferred to designate a set (and no longer a subset) of individuals in a general way.
