| Crynodeb: | The results of the latest sociolinguistic survey on the situation and evolution of the Basque language, carried out in 2021, have just been made public. This study is carried out every five years at the request of the Basque Government, the Government of Navarre and the Public Office of the Basque Language, which brings together the French State and local authorities. This survey covers the competence, transmission and practice of the language of Etxepare in all areas of social life (from home to formal relationships) as well as attitudes towards the use and promotion of this language. In the Basque Autonomous Community, 4450 people aged 16 and over were interviewed, of whom 2650 were Basque speakers and 1900 were non-Basque speakers. The fact that the survey has been repeated since 1991 allows us to have a historical perspective of three decades, and therefore to measure the evolution at work over the long term. Because this survey is realised simultaneously in all Basque territories on both sides of the border, it permits us to compare the situation of the Basque language on the Iberian Peninsula and in France. |
