| Итог: | This article focuses on the co-occurrence of ET and ALORS, both in assertive contexts [Et alors ; et alors] and interrogative-exclamatory contexts [Et alors ?]. The paper takes a fresh look at Gérald Antoine’s (1958) proposals according to which the Middle French period was a turning point, marked by the semantic weakening – or even disappearance – of ‘strong’ connectives, and that long forms [ET + adverb] were simply ersatz forms of ET alone. The proposed analysis shows that alongside the combinations that actually appeared in Middle French, which are compositional and act as connective substitutes (these are the ones used in assertive contexts), a use of ET ALORS as interactional discourse marker emerges much later in interrogative-exclamatory contexts. The analysis also shows that this modern pairing [ET ALORS ?] is not (or not entirely) compositional, and encodes new discourse relations. |
