| الملخص: | This article aims to study the pragmaticalization of a discourse marker whose use stopped around the end of the 16th century, viz. et puis, used to open an interaction. This use, which today has become impossible, remains marginal in the corpora we searched (Frantext, BFM), without, however, being negligible. We see that et puis, apart from the function we are dealing with, is used as a continuative marker and discourse organizer. Yet, its use as a discourse initiator has received very little, if any, scholarly attention or is hardly documented. We hypothesize that this function stems from the underdetermination of et. This underdetermination is already found in its medieval use. As for its disappearance, it is possible that it was achieved for the benefit of et bien, operating with the same syntactic pattern. |
