| Résumé: | Based on a cohort of young women recognized as high-level athletes, this article aims to analyse the effects of their belonging to various sections of the working classes on their sporting trajectories. Do stable families at the “top” of the popular space produce more champions than the most fragile ones? Within this popular group, do female elites stand out for the volume and prestige of their productions? According to what principles? Based on a survey conducted in France in the Pays de la Loire region among 768 female athletes labelled “high level”, this article offers an original look at the elite sporting space. On the one hand, it maintains and reproduces the social order. But on the other, it is ultimately very permeable to the working classes and thus constitutes a place of “unexpected” profits for young girls from modest backgrounds. These profits are not limited to sports and can also translate into unexpected academic success. |
