| Sumari: | The following contribution presents a purely syntactic interpretation of the origins of the passé composé in Romance. Placed within a generative framework, it aims at showing how the interaction of different linguistic modules led to the development of the various passé composé forms of the Romance languages from their Latin ancestors. The syntactic structures are of primary importance here since they allow us to avoid a vague semantic interpretation, which in turn would imply a diffuse structural analysis. Rather, we appeal for the opposite approach, namely that the structure is a sine qua non condition for the codification of meaning. |
