Résumé:The central issue at the heart of this article is that of primary school principals in France. After recalling the historical context of the birth of the post and the topicality of the issue in relation to the new professional standards of the French education system, we present the results of a quantitative questionnaire survey distributed nationwide in the summer of 2019, to which more than 2,500 headteachers responded. Our problematic allows us to examine the role of the variable of headmasters’seniority in the performance of their duties. Our results, which are interpreted from a sociological perspective, taking into account the inductive dimension of the approach, highlight a way of exercising the function that varies in terms of posture and work context according to the seniority of the headteachers.
