Summary:From a (socio)linguistic ethical perspective, this contribution describes the integration of elements of Arendt’s thought related to her linguistic trajectory into a master’s teaching program in French as a foreign language (FLE). The author argues that in this context, reading Arendt is a resource for highlighting the importance of (1) fostering autonomy and preserving the dignity of individual voices, (2) engaging them in collective conversation while respecting their plurality, and (3) nurturing the development of « language confidence » (Bénit 2000 : 131), three fundamental parameters in the process of resisting social and linguistic insecurities. Presenting an exploratory didactic sequence, she centrally discusses the reading of « Only the Mother Tongue Remains », the published version of Arendt’s interview conducted by Günter Gaus in 1964, thematizing forced exile and the resulting plurilingualism. She argues that it serves as an inspiring support for complementary theoretical and introspective discussion on the role of the mother tongue, the identity and solidarity functions of languages, the sense of belonging, and the (fear of) attrition. Furthermore, she advances that considering Arendt’s definition of the concept of action in language-culture didactics – in its connection with the notion of « love of the world » – invites a reevaluation of the « action-oriented » perspective as an « attention-oriented » perspective.
